  1. Bee Blocks

    November 24, 2012 by bigmamaquilts

Halloween came and went…  Thanksgiving came and went…  At least my bee blocks are complete!

These hour glass blocks are for Carolyn in the Stash Bee.  She recommended using the Hour Glass tutorial from Cluck Cluck Sew.   These came together like a dream!  The tutorial was amazing!  I definitely see more of these in my future for all of those charm squares that I don’t know how to stitch up.

The Believe.Do.Good Quilter Kersten for November requested orange, white/off-white, and grey using NO pattern!  I immediately thought of Crazy Mom Quilts improv quilts found here and here.  Improv is not my favorite technique, but these were actually a lot of fun and low stress.  I might actually try for more!

Thankfully Tara from Stash Bee posted her scrappy log cabin December blocks a little early, so I was able to get them done!  Ah-mazing!

I ’m starting our Jesse Tree…  How do you celebrate Advent?

    Believe Do. Good Stitches

So this is what I have accomplished since school ended.  Only one month until school starts…  I’m not sure I’m ready for it.

Have you checked out Katy at I’m a Ginger Monkey and her Hexy MF for Fat Quarterly?  I love Prince!  and this is what I will be working on during the Olympics…

  3. May Stash Busters for Mother’s Day

    Stash Bee3 May 2012

I have a love hate relationship with ‘wonky’.  It is very popular in the flickr world.  I’m not sure if it is my type-A, control freak personality because although I am those things, I can also let my hair down and go with it.  I also like order and ‘neat and tidy’ but I don’t need symmetry for balance.  Crazy, I know!

The May block for Hive 3 at Stash Bee is a postage stamp block  with a ‘wonky’ star somewhere in the inner sections.  Nancy requested blacks, whites, and greys for the block and color for the star.  My purple star is a purple print on black and I like how it sets with the block.  I love the simplicity of the postage stamp block.  2.5″ squares sewn in a 5×5 setting.  It’s a timeless pattern with a modern funky appeal by adding the wonky star.

The block ending up coming together a lot faster than I expected.  The wonky star points were not as hard as I feared.  Although if you look close they all wonky the same… I didn’t do it on purpose.  I guess I must control the wonky even in the depths of my mind.

Here you go Nancy!  I hope you like it, and I can’t wait to see the all the blocks together.

  4. March Stash Bee Hive #3

    March 11, 2012 by bigmamaquilts

    stash bee March 2012

I have always loved quilts that have a scrappy look, as well as the quilting bees from days gone by.  What is better than a quilt made by friends?!?  I finally joined an online quilting bee  organized by Sunni.  And one that uses up my stash, so I won’t have to buy tons of fabric each month. Double bonus!

March is the first month for our group, and it is exciting to see the different blocks come together on Flickr!

Deb requested batiks.  Three green batiks with a light, medium, dark, and a medium pink to mauve batik for a petal.  I knew that I had just the fabrics.  I went through quite a batik phase when I discovered Judy Neimeyer’s double wedding ring pattern.  It is beautiful, but on a to do someday list.  Deb’s block is perfect to use up some of those fabrics that I had.

Deb this will be heading your way on Monday!
